Know About Sariska National Park

Sariska National Park, located in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, India, is a magnificent wildlife sanctuary spread across the ancient Aravalli mountain ranges. Famous for its diverse landscapes of dry deciduous forests, rocky hills, deep valleys, and wide grasslands, Sariska covers an area of 881 square kilometres and supports a rich variety of flora and fauna. The region holds great historical and cultural significance as it was once the royal hunting ground of the Maharajas of Alwar, and even today the ruins of old temples, forts, and ancient settlements can be seen throughout the forest.

Sariska was first declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1958, later became a Tiger Reserve under India’s prestigious Project Tiger in 1978, and finally gained the status of a National Park in 1982. The park has played a remarkable role in global conservation history when it became the world’s first tiger reserve to successfully reintroduce tigers after they had completely disappeared due to poaching in the early 2000s. Through careful relocation, strict protection, and scientific monitoring, the tiger population gradually revived, making Sariska a symbol of hope and conservation success.

The park is home to a wide range of wildlife species including Royal Bengal Tigers, leopards, sambar deer, chital, nilgai, wild boars, langurs, jackals, hyenas, jungle cats, and many others. Sariska’s dry forests are dominated by dhok trees, along with ber, tendu, acacia, khair, and occasional bamboo patches that support a healthy ecosystem. The region is equally famous for its rich birdlife, with more than 225 recorded bird species including peafowl, vultures, eagles, owls, hornbills, kingfishers, and a variety of migratory birds that visit during winter. Adding to its natural beauty, Sariska also houses several heritage landmarks such as the historic Kankwari Fort where Aurangzeb imprisoned his brother Dara Shikoh, the ancient Neelkanth temples dating back more than a thousand years, and the sacred Pandupol temple linked to the legends of the Mahabharata.

Today, Sariska National Park is a major eco-tourism destination offering jeep and canter safaris that take visitors deep into the wilderness to experience the charm of Rajasthan’s wildlife. The park’s management focuses on responsible tourism, forest protection, anti-poaching measures, and community involvement to ensure long-term sustainability. Sariska’s mission is to conserve its natural heritage while providing meaningful experiences to tourists, and its vision is to remain one of India’s finest tiger reserves where nature, history, and wildlife exist in perfect harmony.
